5 Minute Skirt

Y seguimos aprovechando telas.

I love my new skirt! It was made following the 5 Minute Skirt tutorial by GrinseStern, and I used this cool sweatshirt fabric that I had leftover after sewing pants for almost my whole family. It is really comfortable to wear and it will look great with boots and a thicker pullover when it gets colder. Have I already mentioned that I am absolutely fed up of the heat? After such a long summer I am really looking forward to some cold.

The summer is gone but then it is not gone T-shirt

The curse of the Kelopuu

Después quedó aparcado y hace unas semanas me decidí a probarlo.

This pattern was the reason why I bought the Ottobre 5/2014. After a long time sitting on the shelf I gave it a try, and got the huge headache. It was my first time sewing this type of pockets and it was hard to understand how the whole thing had to be done. I got so much stressed out that after finally managing the pockets I threw the unfinished thing to the "i don't want to see this ever again" pile. A few days ago I finally finished it and eventhough I am not totally satisfied with the result, I am happy that it is done. I don't really like the fabric, it is too plain and cheap looking, and the orange cord will need to be changed. But now that I already know how to do the pockets, I can't wait to sew it again, maybe in a thicker fabric like fleece. The zipper is from an old jacket. We have gone through the wardrobe and thrown way many things that weren't usable anymore. Now I have again some space that I will have to fill up soon, right?

Sweat pants for all! - Indigo & Sammalikko

Holidays are over and it's not being very easy to get used again to the everyday routine... meaning working hehe...
Today's entry is about sweat pants and comes with many pictures, so I don't really need to say much. Mine are again drafted from existing pants I already had. The ones for my sister use the Sammalikko Leggings pattern from Ottobre 5/2014, and the kid pants were made with the super cool Indigo pattern from Farbenmix

Solid and Striped # 2

I am in a sewing spree! We were supposed to go on a trip during these dates, but after some recalculation we realized it would be better not to spend that much... So instead I spent on fabrics lol, and for the last couple of weeks my sewing machine has been at full speed! It is almost two weeks since I started the blog, and I got more than 1500 views and a lot of comments. Crazy unbelievable!! I really didn't expect anyone to read my blog. I am so happily surprised!

This is my second take on the Solid and Striped pattern from Ottobre 5/2015. You can see the first here. I love this pattern! This time I did the striped version with 3/4 sleeves. Again, I narrowed the sleeves and widened the neckline a bit, and I did try to match the stripes to the best of my ability. The fabric is a thicker cotton jersey that gives the shirt a good structure. I really hate the flimsy fabrics that cling to your body.

Merino Love - Plantain Shirt

Last weekend we went to Tibidabo, a very beautiful amusement park with long history in Barcelona. Since it is up on the hill, you get such an amazing view of the whole city. Totally recommended for any visitors! The weather forecast was wrong, so my merino wool shirt gave me the really hot day lol. But we enjoyed a lot! :)

I love merino wool knit fabrics, they are super warm and pleasant to wear in winter. Since I tried them, I am not wearing any more polyester thermal shirts. The only problem is the price. Those fabrics are really expensive. Still, now and then I use the chance when there is sales, or when I get the insane mood :-). I've made several shirts for me and my husband, and have bought the fabrics in two places so far: Shelby from Finland, and New Zealand Merino and Fabrics, from New Zealand. Shelby offers only one type of that fabric, in a few different colors, it is good quality and super warm and we normally use it for inner shirts. Also, they offer very interesting free sewing patterns on their site. The New Zealand shop has a huge variety, many different fabric types and weights in 100% merino, or merino blends, which are a bit more affordable. I love this store, and the prices are fairly reasonable compared to merinos elsewhere, but the shipping to Europe, plus the customs, are insanely expensive. I have seen merino knits in other stores but haven't tried them, specially because the prices are even higher. If you know any other good source for this type of fabric, please let me know!

For this shirt I used the free sewing pattern Plantain from Deer&Doe.

These fabrics are amazing. Extremely breathable, and they dry fast. If you air them, they do not get any bad smells and you can wear them for many days. It is perfect when you travel lightweight. Actually, this same shirt was in a trekking in the Himalaya, we were walking 8 hours a day, sweating like hell. I wore it for four days. The black one that my husband is wearing is also a merino, in this case the fabric and the free pattern used are from Shelby. Also, they are easy to care for. You can wash them in the machine, with the wool or delicate program, and without fabric softener. This one is already one year old and has been washed many times, and it is still like new.

And to end this post, here you go the amazing view of Barcelona from the Tibidabo. The city looks incredibly big from there!

Jeans Recycled to Handbag

BEFORE:

These super cute shorts were bought on one of those days when you convince yourself that it is ok to buy one size smaller because your size is not available but no problem you will lose weight and be able to wear it in a couple of weeks... haha sure... and then the years pass and instead of losing one size you gain two, but you don't get rid of them because you never lose hope.

AFTER:

Then, once I understood that I would never ever fit in those shorts in any possible way, one day I got inspired and converted them into a bag. Hahaha... now I can wear my tiny size shorts, and I did not have to suffer any diet lol!

The process was simple. I just unsewed the legs and sewed back together at the front and the back. I added a base in another fabric that I had available with a thick interfacing to give some structure to the bag. I added a zipper, handles and a lining with a couple of pockets.

The bag is really comfortable to carry. You can see it in action here during the summer.

Southport dress

The other day we went to Barcelona and tried a new chinese restaurant. It was delicious and we ate wayyyy too much. Luckily the dress is loose enough and we could still take these pictures on our way back to the car.
I am so in love with my new Southport dress, a pattern by True Bias. The pattern is amazing, the instructions so detailed, and the sewalong really helpful for when you dare yourself into a sea of firsts. This was my second dress ever, my first time making buttonholes (that was scary!) and my first time matching the pattern of a fabric (even more scary!). Call it beginner's luck, but everything went smoothly and the only thing to regret is not having it done earlier to enjoy it all summer.
That day i had an all handmade/refashioned outfit. I bought this men's cardigan for 3 euros at the end of the sales, loved the touch and feel of the fabric and it did fit me well, all I had to do was sew along the sleeves to make them narrower and done! The handbag was made out of a pair of shorts that I could not fit into anymore. I will show it to you in another post.
