The Scrappy Trip Around the World that has actually travelled around the world

I consider myself an international person. That's why I write here in different languages, That's why I love travelling and making friends from all over the world, and that's why this quilt has been in three different continents.

Last year our very good friend Ashok invited us to visit him in Nepal. To put it in short, that was the most amazing trip ever of my whole life and deserves a whole entry of its own, specially to talk to you about the fun of fabric shopping in Nepal! And also, to put it in short too, we were immensely lucky to be there before all the disaster happened. My heart breaks every time I think about the situation they are forced to face now, the places we visited and are completely destroyed now, the vibrant neighborhood were we lived and now is collapsed for the most part. And most importantly the people, all the people who have seen their homes and lives shattered or even worse have lost their loved ones. It makes me cry every single time I think about it. But now let's move on to the nice memories...

Such an invitation to spend 3 amazing weeks with our friend and his family required a special thankyou gift made from the heart! My second queen size quilt ever, you can see the first one here! It is a scrappy trip around the world using absolutely all the green fabrics that I had available at home at that moment. Now... let's not think about flight luggage size and weight restrictions... Let's worry about that later once you realize the quilt is way too big and heavy, how am I supposed to take it to Nepal, what was I thinking of! But finally, we did manage to carry it along with us. Here you can see it on my fence and on my bed :)

I think they really loved it. So much so that they refused to use it so that it wouldn't get damaged... Ah my friend, when will you understand that I really prefer you to use it and love it and damage it, rather than keeping it forever stored somewhere unseen unused!

Then, a few months later, Ashok visited us in Spain on his way back to the USA, where he lives. He came with two surprises. First the quilt! He was taking it with him to the USA. I was so happy to see it again, and excited about its new American life hehe. I really hope you will get a good use of it there! And second, the best possible gift for a girl who likes to sew.... Fabrics!!! Not just a couple of fabrics, but like a million different ones, actually half of a huge suitcase full of fabrics, enough to make 3 or 4 quilts or anything else, and all of them so beautiful, carefully chosen good quality cotton, amazing amazing gift! You know me well Ashok, always nailing it! In the next pic you can see us going one by one through all the fabrics. See the pile by my feet? That wasn't even the half of it!

Me hizo ilusión verlo otra vez! Cómo me conoce Ashok!

Had I known I would start a blog, I would have surely taken better closer pics of all the fabrics! And now comes a little sneak peek of the quilt that I am making with some of them. All Nepali fabrics except for the back which is a soft warm bold pink American flannel. I finished the top at the beginning of summer, so only the quilting is left. I was waiting for the temperatures to drop a bit. Quilting a huge quilt with flannel and wool batting in the middle of the Spanish heat is just too insane! Now that the summer is ending, I hope to finish it soon and start using it!

Meet Ashok!

¡Os presento a Ashok!

In another future post I will tell you about sewing and fabrics in Nepal!
